Affordable places to staycation in the UK post lockdown

Remote glamping stays in Norfolk, Wales and the Peak District that we love

Affordable places to stay in the UK after lockdown

Looking for a post lockdown getaway? We are big fans of glamping, we love shepherd's huts and camping pods and have stayed at a few in various UK locations over the years. As a post lockdown getaway they can offer lots of private outdoor space, self-catering cooking plus some even come with their own private bathroom facilities.

Here are my top three glamping stays that I think you would enjoy and won't cost you a fortune.

Shepherd’s huts, Romney and Ryeland in Norfolk from £60pn

Bircham Windmill, Great Bircham, King's Lynn, Norfolk PE31 6SJ

Bircham Windmill Shepherd's Hut, Norfolk

The shepherd’s huts at Bircham Windmill are relatively local to us and have become one of our favourite places to go if we are in need of a peaceful night away from the stresses of everyday life.

Our perfect trip involves a good walk on the nearby beaches of Brancaster or Holkham, fish ‘n’ chips on the quay in Wells-next-the-sea and a relaxing evening playing board games and enjoying a nice bottle of wine in the hut.

Should you wish to eat at the shepherd’s hut each one has it's own outdoor cooking facilities including a gas stove and BBQ. Inside there is a toaster, kettle and fridge along with all the cooking utensils and crockery you could possibly need.

Great Bircham working mill, Norfolk

The windmill is a working mill and every day the adjoining bakery bakes bread, cakes, pastries and other tasty treats.

There is a small museum worth visiting and on some days you can go to the top of the windmill for a stunning view of the Norfolk countryside.

On site you will also find a café, gift shop and plenty of farm animals to pet and feed.

Please note although the huts themselves come with private cooking facilities the showers and toilets are shared.

Norfolk is a great location for a holiday with its 45 miles of stunning coastline, pretty villages and fresh seafood.

Rural shepherd's hut in the Peak District national park

This shepherd’s hut is the only one on a working farm deep in the Peak District National Park.

We visited last year for a birthday celebration and had a wonderful one-night stay.

The shepherd's hut itself is situated in the far corner of a small paddock, it has a fenced in area for your enjoyment that includes seating and a fire pit with grill.

The hut itself comes with microwave, kettle, toaster and all the crockery you could possible need. There is also a wood-burner for colder nights.

Meeting the resident deer in the Peak District

The hut comes with a private shower and toilet that is located in a barn nearby. In the barn you will also find a fridge for your personal use.

During your stay the only people you will see are the occasional walkers in the distance, farm animals who share the paddock with you and of course the beautiful resident deer that the farmer rescued as a calf when she was found tangled up in barbed wire.

The Peak District itself is a great location for a holiday if you enjoy countryside walks, scenic cycling trails and pretty villages.

Powys camping pods in Wales from £44pn

Powys Pods, Grug Farm, Bryngwyn, Powys, HR5 3QN

Camping pod in Wales, Powys Pods

We visited Powys Pods back in 2015 when they had only just opened and we were lucky enough to have the whole complex to ourselves. We enjoyed some long walks in the Welsh countryside and then in the evenings would retreat to the camping pod with a beer to watch the sun go down.

The pods themselves come with a heater, lamp and should you require them camping beds can be requested. There is a large communal cooking area with sinks, hot plates, BBQ and a fire pit to use which is spread out and therefore offers lots of space for more than one family to use at the same time. The showers and toilets are shared facilities located behind the communal cooking area.

The pods are on a working farm, mainly arable but there are few animals also. It's a lovely spot on the top of a hill with stunning views to enjoy. It is a remote location and you will need to take everything you need with you as there are no shops nearby but if you love peace and quiet and being outdoors this could be the perfect stay for you.
